Steve Shepherd follows career calling by working for massive Nationals Soccer Club

Webmaster of the Week: April 17-23

Nationals Soccer

Customer Information & Technology Director (aka Webmaster)

Use of platform:

PowerPay, Registration, Sitebuilder

Shepherd grew up in the small Indiana town of Hymera (population 790) where he played basketball (he’s a Hoosier, so of course) before attending Franklin University in Columbus, Ohio. Shepherd has a degree in human resources and a background as a project manager for a large electronics company, but the true career calling for the self-described “IT guy” is in building and maintaining websites. Soccer wasn’t on Shepherd’s radar until his son gave the sport a try 17 years ago. Shepherd dove in, too, first to help Waza FC East as webmaster and now serving in the same role for Nationals Soccer, the offspring of a merger between Waza FC East and Premier Soccer Group. Shepherd’s wife, Charlotte, serves as the Director of Operations for Nationals, which serves the Detroit area and has more than 250 teams and 4,000 players.

What he does:

Shepherd structured the club’s home page to make it as easy as possible for parents and players to quickly find the information most useful to them. “I try not to make it too cluttered,” Shepherd said. Links in the top navigation such as Player/Training Info and Family Info are targeted for specific groups, and Shepherd keeps the three Call to Action page elements at the top of the home page updated with links to the most current programs and registrations depending on the time of year. Shepherd uses templates to set up all the team pages, and he does both on-site and webinar training with coaches and team managers, showing how to add team photos, update schedule information and send group text and email messages. Shepherd, who also creates all of the club’s registrations, uses PowerPay to bill the parents of players who join in midseason. He also creates private resource pages for team managers and coaches to access club policy and process documents.

Making his mark:

The College Commitments page lists the names of all the boys and girls who have committed to colleges. Shepherd also displays the logo of the college of choice next to each player’s name.

Fun fact:

Nationals Soccer could just as easily be named “Internationals” Soccer, as 15 of the club’s teams hail from Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
