As a catcher and third baseman at DeMatha Catholic High School, O’Connor helped the Stags win a Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championship as a senior in 1994. He played for two seasons at McDaniel College (formerly Western Maryland College) before a back injury derailed his career. O’Connor’s was still completing college when his high school coach, Charlie Sullivan, reached out about an open position coaching DeMatha’s freshman team. O’Connor took the job, driving nearly three hours round trip each day through Maryland, from Westminster in the the north to Riverdale Park near Washington D.C., where DeMatha practices and plays. He coached the freshman team from 1999 to 2003, when he became a varsity assistant. He took over as head coach in 2007 when Sullivan retried after 24 seasons and 515 victories. The Stags have remained a state and national power under O’Connor, winning conference championships in 2008 and 2013. DeMatha also won Maryland private school championships in 2011 and 2012. O’Connor was inducted into Baltimore’s Boys of Summer Hall of Fame in 2015.

What he does:

O’Connor moved DeMatha baseball onto the SportsEngine platform this fall, and he’s been busy organizing and adding content on the site ever since. The Pride section lists the school’s 24 Catholic League championships dating back to 1957. It also outlines the school’s incredible success in other sports, too, most notably boys’ basketball led by legendary coach Morgan Wootten. O’Connor, who does play-by-play of boys’ basketball games, also serves as the webmaster for the boys’ basketball program. “It’s a different type of school,” O’Connor said, noting that DeMatha holds the distinction of being the only school to be nationally ranked in football, boys’ basketball, baseball and hockey in the same year. “It’s kind of hard to explain. We strive to be good at everything we do.” O’Connor’s Alumni page is filled with photos and bios of Stags who are playing professionally and in college, including major leaguer Brett Cecil, a first-round draft pick in 2007. O’Connor retroactively created the 2016 season, complete with schedule, roster and full statistics from every game. He already has the 2017 schedule posted.

Making his mark:

O’Connor has set up private pages for coaches, players and parents. Those pages have calendars, news, information on how to download the SportsEngine app and follow a specific team and links to forms, handbooks and manuals.
