Innovation, dedication are among volunteer Corey Hegwood's attributes
Tryout & Evaluation Coordinator/Webmaster
Hegwood, who has a degree in computer science from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, is a computer programmer by trade. Hegwood has been a volunteer running DFW Elite’s website for nine years. He joined the organization when his daughter Kristin Askew first started playing for DFW Elite (she is now a senior playing at North Carolina Central University).
Hegwood’s duties for DFW Elite, based in Dallas-Fort Worth and one of the nation’s top summer girls’ basketball programs (seven DFW Elite alums played in the WNBA last season, including former No. 1 overall draft pick Brittney Griner), go well beyond webmaster. He is listed on the site as a Tryout & Evaluation Coordinator, and he is also in charge of (in no particular order) fundraising, player registration and volunteer coordination. Hegwood says he spends about four hours a week maintaining and updating the site but adds, “I could spend 40 hours a week.” He posts news items about upcoming events and current and former players starring for their high school, college and professional teams. He also maintains on the team pages, which includes posting and updating rosters, schedules and results.
Hegwood’s innovative page design and content architecture can be found all over the site, most notably on the Alumni page. His table listing DFW Elite Alumni includes a column that counts how many former players went on to college (217 since 2005) and includes a column that shows the four-year benefit in scholarship dollars.
