When it comes to your young athlete keep your perspective and expectations reasonable, keep your cool and keep your sense of humor!
I grew up in the 1960s. I sang in a neighborhood choir, was a Camp Fire Girl, took piano and ballet lessons, acted in community theatre and played with my neighborhood friends. I mostly walked or rode my bicycle to those activities.
My dad enjoyed playing golf, was a handball champion in his day, and preferred watching individual to team sports. My mom had no interest in sports whatsoever, and my sister and I were not involved in any. I grew into a self-styled sports fan, mostly enjoying others’ enjoyment of the games, and that hasn’t changed. I am possibly the least competitive person I know, and it baffles my husband! His family is all about competition and when I joined the clan I was both amused and bemused by their enthusiastic and frequent contests.
