Name: Ryan Mottern
Site: Sandlot Sox
Position: Coach, Webmaster
Background: Mottern grew up about 100 miles southeast of Dallas in Palestine, Texas. He was a four year letterwinner on the baseball team, where he played every position except catcher. He also lettered two years in football, and he played fullback in front of future Oklahoma and Minnesota Vikings star running back Adrian Peterson. Mottern also attended Oklahoma and was a four-year letterwinner as a pitcher, outfielder and occasional designated hitter. He still holds a spot in the Sooners record book as being a part of the only combined no-hitter in Oklahoma history. He lives in Tulsa with his wife, Hillary, and their son Luke.
What he does: Mottern has been a coach with the Sandlot Sox for the last four years. He volunteered to take on the webmaster duties, ramping up his involvement two years ago when the organization moved onto the SportsEngine platform. “Our old site was so bad,” Mottern said. “I made the pitch, if we really want to do this the right way, we need to make some sort of investment in a new website.” The Sandlot Sox was founded in 2005 and is based out of Tulsa, Oklahoma. An Oklahoma City arm of the organization was added in 2008, and All American Baseball joined as a partner in 2013. Mottern wanted the organization’s site to have a vintage look and feel, and he has carried that homepage theme throughout the site by loading classic photos on multiple pages. “I wanted the site to look a bit different,” Mottern said, adding that the organization is poised to grow from 12 teams to 20 next summer. Mottern created a College/MLB Alumni section that includes an MLB Draftees page as well as pages that show players who have made college commitments for each year going back to 2011.
Making his mark: Mottern’s ’16 Tournaments section included pages for all five of the tournaments it hosted, and each page listed which teams were coming, the tournament format, batting practice and game schedules, field directions and a registration link.
