Webmaster of the Week: August 1-7

Name: Glenn Jones

Site: Lake Norman Little League

Position: President, Information Officer, Division Commissioner, Head Coach

Use of platform: Branded Mobile, League, Registration, Sitebuilder

Background: Jones grew up in northeastern Georgia in Clarkesville (population: 1,500). He played baseball through Little League, then turned his attention to tennis and basketball in high school. He played intramural softball while attending Georgia Tech and continued to hone his game in church leagues. He’s done volunteer work for Lake Norman Little League since 2012, starting as information officer and a division commissioner before taking over as president last year. A senior sales engineer, Jones coaches his two sons, ages 12 and 11, on multiple Lake Norman Little League teams.

What he does: A lack of effective league communications was a concern for Jones when he first decided to volunteer. Interaction with social media, sending email responses and “everything else” were Jones’ initial responsibilities. He’s kept the information officer title even after becoming the league’s president, although he’s more than willing to share the workload. “I need to broaden my reach and get more people involved,” said Jones, who said the league has grown from about 100 players since its inception in 2011 to about 700 players this spring. “We have a great team of volunteers; I just need to find the right people to get involved.” Jones used templates to give division and team pages a consistent look. He also used the GameChanger integration with SportsEngine to enter stats for all of his team’s games. “The kids love the stats,” Jones said. “We have players in our league that are just thrilled to see their stats.” Jones tried several different layouts on the Sponsors page before settling on its current, streamlined look.

Making his mark: Jones used the code element on the League Boundary page to embed Google maps that show not only the Lake Norman Little League boundary but also the North Carolina Little League District 3 boundary.
