Webmaster of the Week: September 21-27

Name: Jeremy Martin

Site: Brookfield East High School Athletics and Activities

Position: Athletic director, webmaster

Background: Martin spent 10 years as the athletic director at the Port Edwards (Wisconsin) School District before heading south to the Milwaukee suburb of Brookfield in 2013. He’s embraced his position as the athletic director at Brookfield East High School, which has an enrollment of 1,286 and longstanding rivalry with neighbor Brookfield Central. That rivalry extends into cyberspace, where Central edged East in rankings of top high school athletics sites on the Sport Ngin platform in August of 2014. “We need to stay ahead of our sister school,” Martin said with a chuckle. To that end, Martin initiated a redesign of East’s site, tweaking the colors and content and emphasizing large photos of students and athletes. “We wanted to give it a more professional look,” said Martin, a UW-Stevens Point graduate who, with his wife Beajay, have four children (two boys and two girls) ranging in age from 12 to 6.

What he does: Martin, who has a masters degree in education with an emphasis in technology from Marian University, oversees the content and navigation of the home page, where he has sections devoted to both news and announcements. Martin also has two videos posted on the homepage, including one showing highlights of a boys’ volleyball victory. Martin asks that each of the school’s 22 coaches manage their team pages on the site. Coaches are given permission to their section and, if needed, help setting up their pages from East alum Lexi Sotiros, who helps Martin manage the site. Team pages from the Wisconsin Sports Network also are mirrored onto East’s site, avoiding the need for duplicate entry of schedules, rosters, scores, stats and other information.

Making his mark: Martin has made it a point of emphasis to remember and honor Brookfield East’s rich athletic history by creating a Spartan Athletic Hall of Fame. He has a section on the site’s homepage that gives details about this year’s Oct. 10 Hall of Fame Awards Banquet and the second group of hall of fame inductees. A separate Hall of Fame page on the site has a photo gallery showing last year’s inaugural class of inductees.
