Webmaster of the Week: August 18-24

Name: Derek Ricke

Site: Minnesota Hockey

Position: Marketing and Communications Assistant for Minnesota Hockey since April of 2013. Started at Minnesota Hockey as intern in September of 2012.

Background: Ricke worked in media relations for the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, a minor league baseball team before joining Minnesota Hockey. Ricke got his first taste of using a website to communicate with players and fans as president of the club hockey team at the University of Minnesota-Crookston,

What he does: Ricke is always on the lookout for relevant content that viewers will find interesting and informative, even at the height of summer. So instead of trolling for walleyes, Ricke casts a wide net for news and features. “I think our focus is to promote the Minnesota Hockey brand and the Minnesota Hockey model. We want to promote player development, we want to promote growing the game and we want to promote safety.” This summer Ricke has written stories about the Minnesotans participating in the Minnesota Wild development camp and the local players who reached USA hockey’s national camps in New York. Ricke also landed an interview with Matt Niskanen, the Minnesota native who was one of the most coveted NHL free agent defensemen available this summer.

Making his mark: Ricke was instrumental in the site adding schedules and scores from region and state tournaments, marquis events for the organization. “That is something we have put a lot of emphasis on,” Ricke said. “We’re investigating putting everything on the tourney tool and developing a mobile app.”
